PORT MARLBOROUGH TO BE STAGING PORT FOR MERIDIAN WIND FARM
August 2007
Port Marlborough has won a contract worth more than $1million as the staging port for the 62 wind turbines to be used at Meridian's Makara wind farm.
The wind turbines each weigh approx 87 Tonnes, with 72m high towers and 40m long blades. The equipment will arrive from overseas and be stored at Shakespeare Bay. From there it will be barged 32 nautical miles across Cook Strait via Tory Channel to Oteranga Bay. The Shakespeare Bay project will commence in July 2008 and last for up to 18 months.
Port Marlborough's Chief Executive, Des Ashton said the company is pleased to have been awarded the contract, which has been almost 2 years in the making. "We are excited that the potential of Shakespeare Bay is starting to be realised and we look forward to the benefits that will flow to the Port, Picton and the Marlborough economy."
In addition to export log storage Shakespeare Bay is currently used as a base for the pipe spooling activity associated with the Kupe oil and gas project. The pipe spooling project will be completed by March 2008.
